How NLP Works
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a powerful tool that helps us understand the structures of human communication and human excellence. By understanding these fundamental structures people can take charge of their thinking, their communication, and their emotions in a highly effective way. They are able to manage their own mental experiences – and those of others – more successfully.
NLP explores the connection between how we think (Neuro), how we communicate our thoughts (Linguistic), and our patterns of behaviour and emotion (Programming).
By studying these relationships and learning from them, people can effectively transform the way they typically think and act. They can make the choice of replacing unhelpful patterns, and choose to adopt new, far more successful models of behaviour. This activity is called Modelling; and is a key distinction between NLP and traditional psychological therapy.
With the use of NLP we can transform the way we think and behave to have the greatest impact on our lives. We can dramatically alter the results we get in our professional and personal relationships. Today NLP is considered one of the most powerful skills one can have; and it is used in a number of settings, including therapy, psychology, business, people management, sales, sports coaching, and all forms of personal development.
Growth and Development via NLP
Although very few people are born with exceptional gifts, we all possess some unique strengths and talents. Our ability in any specific area is developed over time, and with focus, practice, and repetition. When we commit to an action, learn from our mistakes, and/or find ways to improve on these mistakes; we develop mastery in our chosen field of endeavour. Often though, this is a naturally drawn-out process; and can take months (or even years).
Instead of investing such a long time to get the results we hope for, NLP helps us complete the process in a few sessions. This applies to change in our personal or our professional lives; and even in some area of interest (such as sport). NLP uses information about the mind; how it processes, stores, and recalls information; and about our communication with ourselves and with others. Neuro-Linguistic Programming then empowers us to discover and utilise strategies that can be used to create exceptional outcomes quickly.
The term ‘NLP’ was coined in the mid-seventies by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. Grinder was a teacher at the University of California while Bandler was a student. While editing Gestalt Therapy transcripts Bandler realised that the therapists actually used a pattern of language to create change in their patients. Until this point the therapists themselves were not conscious of this happening. This ground-breaking discovery prompted Bandler and Grinder to develop the basic process upon which all NLP is founded. They called this process ‘Modelling’.
Since then, NLP has grown in both function and scope. Because of its focus on prospective change, it has found application in many situations that are out of the bounds of traditional psychotherapy. Amongst many other benefits, NLP can assist you to:
